- London-based Greek producer, Argy, returns to Steve Bug's Poker Flat for his latest offering, the 'Night Ritual EP', 3 tracks of tightly-produced minimal techno.
Born in Rhodes, Argy, real name Argy Theolis, is a talented young producer who is very much in demand following his biggest release to date, last year's ‘Love Dose' (also on Poker Flat), which saw the Luciano remix named as the ‘Best Remix of 2005’ by influential German magazine, Groove. With musical in Bossa Nova, which is very much centred around the percussion and drums, his productions never seem rushed, and once again the same tight, careful production is evident on this new EP.
On the A-side, Night Ritual is a very deep number with minimal beats. However it's the percussion that really gets heads down on the dancefloor before listeners get overcome by a sample that drones like a ghostly frown. On the B–side are two tracks. First up is Poke Her Flat, an obvious slight proverbial Michael on the actual label. Intelligent production is once again the name of the game as a stripped down minimal bass line and beat, more centred towards the dance floor, lead into a hyperactive whipping sound taking the atmosphere into darker waters. Cry Like A Girl is already being played by the likes of Andrew Weatherall and James Priestly (from SecretSundaze) and includes a simple vocal which builds around the well-arranged samples, beats, drums, and bass lines. A really nice use of build up and breaks underpin this minimal excursion.
Based on the tracks on this new EP it seems like Argy is really developing as an artist, delivering three quality cuts which should get the punters moving and be hammered by some top DJs. A future hero we all should watch closely.
