  • Hot off the heels of his recent collaborative release with fellow Miami-based DJ and producer Coffintexts, Jonny From Space’s first solo EP, No Swim Advisory, lands on local staple Danny Daze's OMNIDISC imprint. It dives deep into the darker, murkier waters of swampy techno, a fitting sound from the artist and promoter who operates quietly but crucially behind the scenes in Miami clubland. As many other artists from the balmy city have drawn attention to a new generation of percussive, reggaeton- and dembow-tinged techno and broken beat, Jonny From Space has been the discreet strong-arm keeping this club scene operating smoothly. He juggles many roles, from coordinating logistics and handling bookings for venues like Club Space, Floyd and the III Points Festival, to co-founding the party Series Objects Don't Dance with fellow Miami DJs Sister System and True Vine—all while pumping out collaborative productions with Nick León, INVT and others. No Swim Advisory opens with "Hurricane Party," where a siren-like squish—reminiscent of Daniel Bell’s "Schitzo-Squelch"—kicks off things off before rounded drums add a gentle forward momentum, avoiding what easily could have been a heavy-handed shove. Danny Daze's remix plunges the original into a deep abyss of chugging techno with a vocal sample that sounds like it's been submerged under a storm surge. The title track features a marimba melody and twinkling synths, meandering along like sun rays dancing on the surface of the sea. "Skin On Skin" returns back to a heavy, percussive rhythm and deep subterranean bass, while an ethereal voice weaves in and out, making for a stripped-down but effective DJ tool. The EP ends with "Wetland," a synthy jam that sounds like it belongs in in the Everglades. A dreamy ebb and flow, like a tide pulling through reeds, it sounds like Odezenne's Au Baccara (which to me, is the perfect end-of-summer melancholic beach album) combined with Danny Daze's early records. No Swim Advisory is dedicated to South Florida, known for its vast wetlands and beaches that make up a fragile ecosystem that depends heavily on symbiosis. The wetlands are one of the most productive and diverse ecosystems on the planet, but tend to be overlooked, and considered to be up for development despite their massive importance to the water supply, an apt metaphor for all that Miami has given to the musical landscape of the Americas. The so-called Magic City serves as a diverse nexus of Latino communities and immigrant diasporas, and its wide-ranging cultural influences are reflected in its creative output—especially when it comes to the new wave of club music hitting its shores and beyond.
