Max Mohr - Trickmixer EP

  • For the 101st release on Playhouse, we have a nice 4 track release by Max Mohr who unleashes a variety of tastes in his Trickmixer EP. First up is Sound City and I must say that this production sure does have a nice bounce to it. Minimal in one aspect with the twisted percussive effects and sounds, but the baseline has a pure raw funk to it that gives the track a great balance. Northern Star follows this and the tempo and action steps down a notch as we are treated to a more minimal track full of quirky beats and eerie percussive effects, not to mention some atmospheric effects that help give the track a nice eerie feel. On the flip you firstly have Old Song, which is a very nice production full of melody and summer vibes. The kick and drums are quite full and thick, but the melodic pads and general melodies that roam throughout the production give this track a great feel. Mercy is the concluding touch to this very nice EP, and it is perhaps the EP at its most daunting. Evil lurking soundscapes are created alongside a quirky beat structure and a nice bouncing baseline that lies underneath it all. Despite its haunting nature, the production is simply riveting. This is a fantastic EP it must be said, and although it may not have a big crossover appeal, this EP really does showcase the innovative nature of Playhouse, and Max Mohr in particular.
