- An impressive EP from one of East Africa's key artists.
- Nightclubs heave to the sound of dancehall every weekend on the streets surrounding Nyege Nyege's recording studio in Kampala. This has clearly rubbed off on Nyege Nyege resident Rey Sapienz, most audibly on the spiky, acid-fueled "Dancehall Pigmé," which appears on the Congolese producer's new EP for Hakuna Kulala. Mushoro also contains echoes of soukous, the Congolese genre that's a staple at many of Kampala's open-air bars: the genre's rhythms are pitched down, warped and then baked into clammy experimental club tracks like "Mushoro" and "Ngando." Aside from "Dancehall Pigmé," the other standout here is "Entaintenment," a propulsive tune whose beats smack hard alongside coolly delivered vocals, rounding out an impressive EP from one of the East African club scene's key artists.
