  • Bendik Giske makes dazzling saxophone music. Adjust, his first release on Smalltown Supersound, which precedes an album coming next year, gives a taste of what he can do with a sax, some microphones and a circular breathing technique. Buoyed by a raft of remixes, Adjust is a solid debut from an intriguing artist. The original "Adjust" is mesmerizing. Over six spellbinding minutes, Giske blows his notes in waves of varying intensity, with vocal-like sounds that gurgle and squeal like the work of noted trombonist Arve Henriksen. Giske's music has the same rarefied air but it's more intense, looping deliriously as if he had infinite lung capacity. If you didn't know better, you might assume it was a techno track's endless loops. Then there are the remixers. Deathprod, another Norwegian artist adept at wringing otherworldly sounds from acoustic instruments, flattens "Adjust" into one an earth-shaking drone piece, while Total Freedom creates a whirling dervish of gasping vocals and breathy sounds. The other two remixes hint where Giske's already repetitive music could go in dance floor terms, particularly Rezzett's skittery lo-fi techno version. Lotic assaults "Adjust" with bulky breakbeats, replacing Giske's delicacy with thrilling dynamics. It's one of Lotic's most memorable efforts, and its imaginative approach is as impressive as the original.
