- The Special Projects series is an avenue for techno, but it doesn't sacrifice that special Rekids groove. Its third release comes from DJ Deep, a techno artist well versed in pairing funk with tougher sounds. His Parisian Kid EP is dark and booming, but each track has a thick chug that recalls the industrial sludge of Fachwerk's early catalogue. You can hear it in the heaving low-ends, which hum underneath slapping claps, bleeps and the occasional dub techno stab.
Each side of the vinyl has a different mood. "La Grande Brasserie" and "La Grande Brasserie 2e Service," on the A-side, are peak-time rollers, with heavy kicks and a relentless drive. The former's acid licks and syncopated claps are dance floor killers, even though they disappear too quickly. The B-side is funkier. The title track is the EP's top tune, with hints of tribal percussion and a heaving bassline. Its main riff is the bassline's deranged pulse, which comes back with a vengeance after an extended breakdown halfway through. The shuffling "Chord Kids" is more abstract, with a drifting chord pattern that's the EP's brightest melody.
