- New York resident Brian Piñeyro has been getting into breakbeats lately, with his new aliases, Luis and DJ Xanax, folding iconic drum sounds into unusual club-ready shapes. The latter project takes a more direct junglist approach, but this debut Luis EP for 1080p retains the kind of lush hypnotism that his DJ Wey music has gravitated towards. Dreamt Takes's sound is split between a number of stylistic signifiers—electro bounce, ambient drift, chilly IDM synths, dubwise bass drops—and yet beholden to none more than another. For every skewed break in "Talk Me Down" there's smeared pads and bulbous sub frequencies floating in dislocated loops. The simple drum machine rhythms of "Kirgaly" and "Shea's World" are laced with traces of acid squelch and warm new age tones.
Piñeyro's fusions treat genre like an open buffet, which makes these tracks feel both experimental and familiar. You may have never heard a breakbeat skip so gracefully as the one in "HV's Sequence" (or heard one amidst so much melodic interplay), and the subtle twists take each beloved trope to a new place. The effect is like an abstract collagist recreating a classic stone sculpture. On the dance floor, Dreamt Takes might perplex as much as it entrances, but it won't ever go unnoticed.
