Nummer - Life Path III

  • Delen
  • In the year-plus they've operated as Nummer, Londoners Emmanuel Corre and Silvère Letellier have accomplished a fair amount, including the release of multiple EPs and the launch of their own label (they even started a side project). So it may be their prolific streak that explains just how eclectic Life Path III is; with enough standard house and techno hybrids under their belt, the pair now sound ready to explore the fringes. That's not to say this Fragil Musique four-tracker skimps on dance floor heat, but it does take just about every opportunity to get weird. The A-side exemplifies Corre and Letellier's creative mindspace here: "Earth Shift" is a scuffed, dubby jam with more tics than a Tourette's patient, while "To 4th Dimension" is 97 seconds of cosmic pads and rain sounds. Basically, anything goes on Life Path III, and the duo handles the freedom well. Though both "Cosmic Love" and "Circulation" lean into standard 4/4 templates, they're wrapped in loads of atonal detritus and tightly compressed into bulbous packages. "Cosmic Love" overstays its welcome (seven-plus minutes of 112 BPM meandering is a bit much), but it's more than made up for by its counterpart. On "Circulation," the duo prove their eccentricities can be funky, too. And with its slippery bass loop and punchy percussion flourishes, Life Path III's last track makes the case that these two should stick in this mode at least a little while longer.
