- In October last year, news hit that San Francisco outfit Icee Hot were calling time on their five-year run. First a party and later a record label, the Bay Area collective were something of a local institution, responsible, through more than 70 events and nine EPs, for many of the city's best dance floor moments in recent memory. To go with Icee Hot's 28-hour swansong at Public Works in January, the tenth and final release called on fellow San Franciscans Vin Sol and Matrixxman to make their label debut.
Daddy Issues slots nicely into the Icee Hot catalogue. Opener "Lotus Position" is Vin Sol & Matrixxman on a breezy house tip, easing you in with a bed of tumbling kicks, gusty melodies and gushing pads. The remix, from Icee Hot co-founder Ghosts On Tape, is a swirling, synthy slow-burner, which, for all its noise and build-up, ends up delivering little. "Interrog8" and "What You See" are simpler and more obviously club-ready, and fare better for it. The former sends a snappy bassline rolling through a canopy of eerie flickers, giving the track a sinister feel. The latter is even more stripped-back, as another catchy kick and bass combo is adorned with the odd percussive flourish. This isn't Icee Hot or Vin Sol & Matrixxman's best work, but at this juncture it probably makes more sense to look at the bigger picture: Icee Hot have made a large contribution to both the San Francisco scene and America's electronic music underground at large.
