- With two bona-fide hip-hop anthems already under his belt, Bobby Perman has proven himself a worthy contemporary of fellow Glaswegians such as Rustie. "Billboard" and "Rosario" were both larger-than-life bangers. SV8, his third EP, feels a little flat in comparison. Each of its tracks pairs Perman with a producer of a similar caliber, though even with the extra name power the record feels oddly hesitant.
If there's one thing Perman does really well (aside from those fist-pumping choruses), it's drums. His snares and kicks hit with a perfectly weighted midrange boom that feels more like a drummer than a drum machine. That's one of Yung Gud's core skills, too, so of course the drums on "Fire" sound massive, as do the creeping, X-Files-style synths. But the neutered synth guitar and squeaky strings don't hold up their end of the deal. The Lunice team-up, "Casper," is even more barebones, but it has a silky feel that allows it to float freely between harder passages and weightless builds. Inkke rounds off the triptych on "Ice," which is where the pared-down style properly comes to life. The drums stagger and stomp like a drunk trying to do pirouettes, and there's enough breathing room for the whistling synths to make their mark.
