- We know that Julio Bashmore can write a good hook and an even better bassline. That's made his lifeless recent work ("Duccy" and "Peppermint") especially disappointing. Thankfully, "Simple Love"—the first taste of an upcoming full-length—has a glint of the old magic back, even if it's not quite in full view just yet.
"Simple Love" is basically an '80s drum machine and some slumping organ melodies. J'Danna's one-line vocal doesn't add anything; instead, it's Bashmore's excellent sense of pacing that's appealing, drifting from brisker passages into lilting breakdowns. The sounds are clear and vibrant, and though there's not much to latch onto, there's little that should inspire distaste either. It might still feel like Bashmore on autopilot, but at least he's closer to his old self.
