- Such was the ubiquity of Midland's barnstorming "Trace" last year, it was always likely to revisited. Aus's approach is to offer the EP to two producers with vastly different levels of experience. After a decade-long hiatus, Grain's resurgence continues with his reworking of "Trace" into a juddering, peaktime house workout. A steady gallop of tightly-wound toms, the original's resonating bass and stammering vocal set the tempo for a tense build that keeps things straining at the leash.
Leon Vynehall's radical twist on "For (Yacht) Club Use Only" finds the Aus affiliate laying down a twitchy, percussive groove. Snares hiss like steam engine pistons on full chat and a lurching staccato bark hammers out the rhythm, reaching its peak with a skirl of synths that are part Pink Floyd, part Phantom Of The Opera. It's got a hint of eccentricity about it, which is rarely a bad thing.
