- Matt Whitehead's "A Is For Acid" had a moment in the sun last year when Blawan dropped it on Boiler Room. It became the subject of countless track ID requests. When it did get released it was hidden away on a limited split 12-inch with Neil Landstrumm for Don't. Now Perc launches his new LTD imprint using Whitehead's original as the basis for a remix package.
The appeal of "A Is For Acid" is obvious. This original is acid house with a signature Chicago bounce. The way it doubles back on its simple ascending melody is addictive, and some well-placed jackhammer blasts keep the whole thing unusually light-hearted. Perc's "Redux," to the impatient listener, barely changes anything. He scrapes off some polish, though it still feels too playful to be a comfortable addition to the Londoner's steel-and-glass universe.
His "Mod Mix" is a more comprehensive remix, this time melting the textures into sizzling puddles of distortion. You can faintly hear the original's perky spirit peeking from underneath all the wreckage. MPIA3 completes the destruction. His version is like a fireball, every rapid kick landing with a blast of ugly, compressed frequencies. Faint remnants of the original make it one of the more accessible productions yet from Truss's sadistic side project.
