- Berlin-based artist Samuel Kerridge has caused quite a fuss over just one EP, last year's Auris Interna on Horizontal Ground. Not that he doesn't deserve it: the release revealed an impressive command of melting techno, dark ambient and noise. His second comes as part of the latest wave from Regis' renowned Downwards, an imprint with considerable history in the kind of music Kerridge has committed himself to. He turns out to be a good fit, and one-ups his first release with Waiting For Love.
The EP plunges Kerridge's techno impulses even deeper into the primordial muck. His brilliant RA podcast showed him adept at blending stasis with propulsion, something that continues here. Part one lurches uneasily over creeping bass synths, while part two finally lets the beat loose in waves of phased noise and psychedelically panned scrapes. It recalls the darker end of Sandwell District with its clockwork percussion, and its wheezing bass and creaking metal sounds are pure evil. Part three takes the same device—maddeningly persistent rhythms—and pushes an overdriven synth through it, echoing the tribal pulse of groups like Wolf Eyes. The fourth offers the most to grapple with, tracing a wavering bassline over hushed drums before breaking out into blinding passages of synth.
