- Techno veterans Jörg Burger and Wolfgang Voigt have a long and significant history in dance music. But their collaboration as Mohn earlier this year—which gave us a charming debut album of thoughtful downtempo techno—will go down as one of their career highlights. It was an album for the sofa surfers, however, so here Burger and Voigt drag one of the tracks, "Ebertplatz 2020," to the dance floor.
Burger's re-rub sees him melt the elegant, frozen majesty of the original, turning it into a steamy, tech/trance shuffle replete with cosmic whooshes, juddering bass pulses and chugging, muted guitars. It's difficult to categorise Voigt's take on the track as anything but trance—albeit of the techy, progressive kind. Think late '90s/early '00s labels like Platipus for reference. Repetitive synth chords cascade down as emotive melodies swirl on top with a squelching bassline driving it along. Kompakt's own Terranova eschews the trancey approach, pointing it towards housey territory instead. It keeps the melancholic undertones of the original but fuses it with deep piano phrases and crunching percussion with steam-driven hi-hats. An intriguing package then, but one that requires a leap of faith in places.
