- Carl Craig and Laurent Garnier celebrate the Detroit and European roots of the genre on double CD ‘The Kings of Techno’...
Carl Craig and Laurent Garnier team up on a double CD celebrating the Detroit and European roots of the genre. ‘Kings of Techno’ will be released early October.
Frenchman Laurent Garnier offers up a Detroit-centric mix that starts up outside of the techno tradition with tracks selected from Motor City punk (The Stooges), Motown soul (Aretha Franklin, The Temptations) and funk (Funkadelic). Garnier’s mix ends on a wealth of classic and rare techno cuts from the city including vinyl by BFC, Arpanet, Jeff Mills and Carl Craig himself.
Detroit native Carl Craig reaches across the Atlantic from the other direction, splicing together a history of European electronics that impacted on techno including cuts of Italo disco (Kano, Capricorn), synth-pop (Visage, Art of Noise) and electro (Yello, Alexander Robotnick).
‘The Kings of Techno’ is the sixth edition in record label Rapster’s ‘Kings of’ series. Previous editions have covered house, hip-hop, funk and jazz. The concept behind the series is to give DJs a free reign beyond the usual restraints imposed on them, and judging by the tracklists, both Garnier and Craig seem to be reveling in the idea.
‘The Kings of Techno’ features artwork from Rolling Stones photographer & bon viveur extraordinaire Michael Joseph.
