  • Hooversound Recordings cofounder SHERELLE is starting a new solo venture. BEAUTIFUL will release music, host educational workshops, offer technical resources and eventually seek to own venues, with the overall goal of prioritising and uplifting the Black and LGBTQI+ music community, the UK artist explained in a statement. BEAUTIFUL's first offering is a compilation featuring some of SHERELLE's favourite artists around Europe and the UK. "All of the people chosen are people I have been fans of for a long time," she said. As a label, she sees BEAUTIFUL following a similar path as Black-run groups such as Juke Bounce Werk, Haus of Altr, 2000BLACK and AKO Beats. Explaining her intentions behind BEAUTIFUL, SHERELLE pointed to the hardships and widespread inequality faced by Black and LGBTQI+ artists in growing their career. Being a Black queer women in electronic music has "the parallels of being super rewarding and also super exhausting," she described, noting that "SO much energy is needed to exist." Moreover, Black artists have been disproportionately affected by Covid-19, she added. "Loss of income has deeply affected my communities, especially considering the lack of representation and bookings that fluctuate within the mainstream scene has not helped." Keeping these factors in mind, she hopes to offer minority artists "the necessary tools to have a fair chance in this scene." Read her full statement below.
