RAMZi and Priori have cancelled the release of their collaborative album as Jumanjí following criticism of the record's content.
Jumanjí, a new project from Canadian artists RAMZi and Priori, were set to release their debut full-length via RAMZi's FATi Records next month. Following the announcement of the record, various parties criticized the record's content for cultural appropriation, specifically its use of the Indian national anthem.
"We ain't in Goa and it ain't the '90s anymore," tweeted All Caps cofounder and DJ Bake. "I'm not sure there's a reason to be using the Indian national anthem and various other vox as a throwaway expression on your dance record."
Today, FATi records announced, "Jumanjí has been halted and excerpts were removed after members of the community voiced legitimate concerns regarding its content. After thoughtful consideration we have decided to cancel the release of this album...
After reading the feedback and engaging in thoughtful discussions, we realize that our process was misguided. No matter our intentions, it is not up to us to determine if the use of borrowed material is upsetting to members of cultures we are not a part of—especially cultures that have experienced the traumas of colonization. We believe cultural identity and social/political equality comes before the music, which is why we decided to call off the production of this record."
