  • New Zealand is showing the path forward in the way an International Dance Music label could be run in the future. TMet recordings, a label based in West Auckland is basing their entire operation on the use of digital downloads and the Internet as their distribution mechanism. Releasing a total of four tracks so far, by New Zealand producers, all tracks are available for download for a cost of only NZ$3 each and as Chelfyn Baxter (A&R) explains “In the music industry too few people have made too much money for far too long. All our tracks cost NZ$3 with 50% of profits going straight to our artists – not up our noses.” This is an exciting new concept and the business model will be monitored closely by both small independent labels as well as the big majors. As DJ’s incorporate more and more non vinyl aspects into their performances, this concept might just provide an outlet for future music sales and if it provides international exposure to quality New Zealand artists then it can only be a good thing.
