- The director and composer made new recordings of 13 of his iconic themes—for movies like Halloween and Escape From New York—with his son and godson.
Sacred Bones Records will release a collection of John Carpenter film themes in October.
Anthology: Movie Themes 1974-1998 brings together 13 tunes that soundtracked some of the legendary director and composer's iconic horror, sci-fi and action films. The 24-year period surveyed stretches from early movies like Carpenter's 1974 feature film debut Dark Star and 1978's Halloween, and '80s flicks including Escape From New York, Big Trouble In Little China and They Live, through to 1998's Vampires. Also included is a cover of Ennio Morricone's theme for 1982's The Thing.
Carpenter re-recorded each piece alongside his son, Cody Carpenter, and godson, Daniel Davies (whose father is Kinks guitarist Dave Davies). Those two musicians also collaborated with John Carpenter on the two solo albums he's released through Sacred Bones the last few years, Lost Themes and Lost Themes II.
After the anthology's October release, Carpenter will get back on the road for live performances featuring both his film music and his own original material. Further details on the tour are still TBA.
Listen to the theme for the 1994 film In The Mouth Of Madness.
