- Cease To Matter is due out in October, and it'll be preceded by a 12-inch in September.
Veteran German experimental producer Burnt Friedman is readying a new album with US vocalist Daniel Dodd-Ellis called Cease To Matter.
Friedman and Dodd-Ellis, both currently based in Berlin, have worked together before: Dodd-Ellis's voice featured on a couple tracks from Friedman's 2007 full-length First Night Forever. They developed the lyrics for Cease To Matter together—along the way making use of a line from Aldous Huxley's classic book Brave New World, "Skies are blue inside of you”—and Friedman then went to work cutting up and reassembling them to fit into his complex, unconventional rhythms. The two "Cease To Matter" tracks feature a piano sample based on a work from the Russian spiritual teacher and composer Georges Ivanovich Gurdjieff. And as usual with Friedman, a few other collaborators are involved: Daniel Schröter provides electric bass guitar on a handful of tracks, and Hayden Chisholm (reeds) and Robbo (voice) each make an appearance.
Cease To Matter will be released in October, through Friedman's own label Nonplace Records, on gatefold LP and a CD with two bonus tracks. A pre-album 12-inch featuring extended, DJ-ready versions of "Skies Okay Blue" and "Cycles," along with the two-minute sound poem "Silberne Libelle," will drop in September. Both feature cover artwork from Theo Altenberg.
On the touring front, Friedman has a handful of live dates scheduled in the coming months, including a set at Japan's Labyrinth.
