- The collection of late-'70s singles outlines a pivotal moment in Jamaican music history.
Soul Jazz Records have outlined details of Studio One Dancehall, a compilation of rare singles spanning Studio One’s dancehall period.
Since 2004, Soul Jazz has dedicated more than 30 LPs to re-issues from the iconic Jamaican recording studio, but this is the first to focus solely on the dancehall shift that took place towards the end of the '70s. The compilation features reggae stars like Sugar Minott, Johnny Osbourne, and Lone Ranger alongside lesser-known DJs—or deejays—voicing atop classic Studio One instrumentals recorded by studio mastermind Clement "Coxsone" Dodd. It outlines a pivotal moment in Jamaican music history, when a new generation of deejays and emcees rose to prominence with a new sound and style that would eventually blossom into modern dancehall. The CD compilation is out now digitally and on CD, with the vinyl version following in mid July.
