- Valentia will come out under Dominick Martin's given name next week.
Calibre will release an album as Dominick Martin on July 15th.
Already known for his jazz and classical-inflected drum & bass sound, Valentia sees the Irish producer explore these influences outside of that genre's rigid rhythmic template. Already his second LP in 2013 (coming shortly after Calibre's Spill in May), the album was recorded during a visit to the secluded Valentia island off the west coast of Ireland. Martin brought only a laptop and microphone with him on the trip, and in his own words, "in one of the rooms sat a piano, and as my fingers touched the keys I knew there was a story there waiting to be told. The sound of the piano in that place was something very magical as 100mph winds battered the house and interrupted my recordings."
Though not all of the album was recorded on the island, the majority of its ideas were produced during his stay. Valentia's sound palette isn't too far removed from Calibre's drum & bass work, but some tracks are beatless, with others employing a jazzy downtempo rhythm. MC DRS shows up to sing on the ballad "My Friend Alone." The record will come on his own Signature Records in digital and CD formats, and the latter will be limited to 500 copies.
