- The Sea and Cake frontman has a fully electronic album set for release this September.
Thrill Jockey is set to release a new album by Sam Prekop, a multi-talented musician best known for his work with indie band The Sea and Cake.
Entitled Old Punch Card, the new record shows a departure from Prekop's style to date. With The Sea and Cake, he blended elements of jazz, indie rock and electronic music, with a result that was often sunny and upbeat. Old Punch Card is a much more challenging listen: composed mostly on a modular synthesizer, with no beats or vocals in sight. In recording the album, Prekop took inspiration from the work of Portuguese composer Nuno Canavarro and from the mysterious Italian avant-garde label Creel Pone.
"I'd have to say this is pretty much unlike anything else I've done," says Prekop. "The most significant difference is that I've left the confines of 'song' structure." Old Punch Card was recorded entirely in his home studio between February of 2009 and March of 2010. The CD and vinyl release will feature hand-painted cover art by Prekop.
