The Scottish selector will oversee Saturday nights at the new London club, which opens in early September.
New London nightclub Phonox has announced Jasper James as its resident DJ.
Starting September 12th, James will take control of Saturday nights at the Brixton venue. "There's no end date to his residency," the club says, "and though there will be guests, they'll never be announced—Jasper has the reigns." The 24-year-old Scottish DJ comes from good stock: his dad, Harri, is a long-time resident at Sub Club in Glasgow.
"It's an absolutely amazing opportunity which I'm extremely excited about," says James. "But at the same time I'm nervous and realise how big a responsibility it is to be playing in the same club week in and week out, keeping it fresh and interesting for the punters and regulars. I have watched my dad and people like Optimo do it in the Sub Club every week. They've set the standard."
Phonox head booker Andy Peyton adds: "We've deliberately chosen someone who isn't the biggest name, but is an incredibly special DJ. We hope that by giving Jasper a platform people will come to recognise this. I want to establish something with his residency that emphasises what's really important about dance music."
Phonox's opening weekend will happen across September 4th and 5th. Friday nights will see DJs play back-to-back sessions or all-night sets. The launch event, on September 4th, sees Julio Bashmore and Ptaki going back-to-back. The following Friday has Matthew Dear going back-to-back with a "very special guest," before Gilles Peterson spins all night on September 18th and Kenny Dope DJs on September 25th. Fridays in October will feature sets from Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs (2nd), Matias Aguayo (9th), The Bug back-to-back with Loefah (16th) and DJ Sneak (23rd).
In November, Future Brown will headline on the 6th, before Kowton, Peverelist and Tessela spin a Livity Sound takeover on the 13th. Benji B and Jon K will go back-to-back on December 4th, and Horse Meat Disco are locked in for December 18th. As previously reported, Phonox will be located at the site of former Brixton nightclub Plan B. The club offers free entry before 9 PM on Fridays and free entry before 10 PM on Saturdays.
